MEP Seán Kelly will represent the European Parliament at the UN Climate Conference in Paris in December that hopes to reach an historic global agreement to combat global warming.

Mr Kelly leads the parliament’s work on the climate agreement as a member of the Industry, Research and Energy committee.

MEPs pushed to ensure global temperatures do not rise 2C above 1990 levels to prevent global warming’s worst effects.

“When it comes to climate action, the EU very much leads the way in effort and ambition. Emissions declined by 19% from 1990 to 2013, while over the same period EU GDP grew by 45%. Our job now is to encourage the rest of the world to join us in combatting this overarching challenge,” he said.

Mr Kelly has worked on the role the EU should play in attaining the UN’s sustainable development goals on ending poverty and achieving sustainable development by 2030.

These will be complimentary to the Paris meeting’s goals, encouraging transition to a low-carbon economy while increasing food production, and recognising the decarbonising effect of forests and grassland.
