Fifa president Sepp Blatter has been questioned by Swiss federal police over alleged financial corruption. The attorney general’s office in Switzerland said it has opened criminal proceedings against Mr Blatter over possible criminal mismanagement and misappropriation of Fifa money.

A former council worker has admitted he unlawfully claimed almost €30,000 in dole payments after he repeatedly failed to declare a €90,000 inheritance. David Lawlor (age 55) of Achill Road, Ballybrack, Dublin, pleaded guilty at Dublin District Court to a charge under the Social Welfare Consolidation Act for making six false declarations relating to undisclosed finances when he was claiming the Jobseeker’s Allowance from December 2009 until January 2012.

Investigations are underway after a well-known Dublin criminal was shot dead on Spain’s Costa del Sol yesterday morning. Gary Hutch - the nephew of former Dublin criminal Gerry "the Monk" Hutch - died after a masked gunman shot him in an apartment complex in Miraflores near Marbella on the Costa del Sol.

Almost a third of asylum seekers arriving in Germany who claim to be Syrian are not, according to officials. Hundreds of thousands of people have come to Germany since the start of the year, seeking refuge from poverty, persecution and war.

Iran has blamed rival Saudi Arabia over the disaster at the hajj that killed more than 700 pilgrims, as Muslims solemnly resumed the final rites of the annual pilgrimage. Thousands protested in the streets of Tehran as a senior cleric angrily demanded Saudi Arabia hand over control of the annual pilgrimage to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the world’s largest body of Muslim nations.
