Frenchman may have died following street assault

Gardaí in Cork are trying to establish if a Frenchman died as a result of an alleged attack in the city centre.

They have made an appeal for people to come forward if they witnessed the attack on the 37-year-old man, which is alleged to have occurred shortly before 2pm last Thursday, September 10, on Lower Oliver Plunkett St.

It is said to have taken place in an area between the Clarion Hotel and Jurys Inn.

The emergency services were called and the man was treated at the scene.

He was then rushed to Mercy University Hospital, but died on Tuesday.

Dr Margaret Bolster, the assistant state pathologist, was yesterday carrying out a postmortem — the results of which will determine the course of the Garda probe.

Gardaí have managed to contact the Frenchman’s family, who have arrived in Cork City.

Gardaí know the man had been socialising with a group of other people in the Lower Oliver Plunkett St area between midday and 2pm last Thursday.

They are anxious to hear from anybody who may have seen an alleged assault take place, or anybody who may have seen the man during the timeframe they have specified.

The man is described as being 5ft 9in in height and of average build, with dark hair and a beard.

He was wearing a navy jumper with navy tracksuit pants, which had white stripes on the side.

He was also wearing dark runners.
