Heady mix of culture on offer this Culture Night

Culture Night is back this Friday for those in the mood for a fix of arts, music, heritage and everything cultural.

Arts and cultural organisations right across the country will open their doors till late with hundreds of free events, tours, talks and performances.

In Cork, there will be more than 200 events taking place in over 100 venues right across the city.

Cork City Council has also confirmed that Bus Éireann will once again provide free buses with live musical performances that will take people all over the city.

The buses will leave every 20 minutes from the Culture Stops at City Hall, with the first bus leaving at 7pm and the last at 10pm.

The night will feature a ‘secret performer’ who is a well-known Dublin-born Irish singer/songwriter, specialising in atmospheric, indie folk/chamber pop. The award-winning artist will be performing a late-night special gig in one of Cork’s most historic and beautiful buildings.

A new development in the Culture Night programme is the announcement of the line-up for the Outdoor Cinema in Fitzgerald’s Park, kicking off just as the sun sets, with a 7.30pm showing of the Oscar-nominated short Give up Yer Aul Sins, followed by the animated film The Secret of Kells. The night will also feature a 9pm screening of The Commitments.

The Vanbrugh Quartet will play a concert by candlelight at 10pm in Cork City Concert Hall. The four-piece ensemble is regarded as one of Europe’s most successful quartets.

The Cork City Concert Hall will also be a hive of musical activity with music workshops for young and old culminating with the performance by Cork Concert Orchestra of A Journey from Mountain to Sea at 10pm.

Several pubs including Counihans, Sin É and The Corner House will host traditional musical performances as part of the Lee Sessions Trad Trail, while there will be live music amongst others in the Bodega, Crane Lane Theatre and Cyprus Avenue.

There will be live music from the Barrack Street Youth Band, Ballyphehane Music Initiative, Comhaltas na Dúglaise Céilí Band and Cork City Samba Band in the City Hall Plaza (6pm-8.45pm).

Choral Evensong will be sung in St Fin Barres Cathedral (6.15pm) and there will be a concert at 7pm in the Quaker Meeting House.
