A move by council contractors to almost cut a road in half — but leave the old road markings in place for now — has Ennis people locals up in arms after a few near misses on the route.

As part of Phase One works on the West Clare Railway Greenway, contractors acting on behalf of Clare County Council have reduced the road width on a two-way system in the Cloughleigh area of Ennis to accommodate new pedestrian and cycle paths.

However, the narrowing of the road has been done with the old road markings in place for now, giving motorists travelling north towards Lahinch the impression that they have only a couple of feet at one point to drive their cars through on the left hand side of the road.
