Second man to face trial over alleged park rape

A second man was sent forward for trial yesterday on a charge of raping a young woman in a park in Cork in the early hours of the morning. The alleged rape took place on June 28, 2013.

Inspector Bill Duane confirmed yesterday that a second man had been served with a book of evidence.

On the inspector’s application Judge Leo Malone sent the case forward for trial at the Central Criminal Court. It will then be a matter for that court to set a date for hearing the case. The defendant’s co-accused was previously served with a book of evidence on a similar charge for his alleged part in the incident.

Detective Garda Katrine Tansley who investigated the case served the book of evidence on the 21-year-old man yesterday at Cork District Court. The charge against him was one of rape.

The disputed allegations in the case were outlined when the matter first came before Cork District Court.

“The alleged circumstances are that the injured party was present (in a park) between 3am and 4am when she was subjected to rape by two males. (One of the men) was known to witnesses and to an extent by the injured party.

“It was alleged both males began to kiss her and she was then held down by (one of the men) when the other male placed his fingers in her vagina,” Det Garda Tansley said.
