Blaskets staff shelter gets €45k from OPW

Some €45,000 has been allocated for a building used as a staff shelter on the Great Blasket Island; €40,000 for conservation work to a summer house, Derrynane, Co Kerry, ancestral home of Daniel O’Connell, and €45,000 for stone work at the walled garden in Garinish Island, Glengarriff, Co Cork.

The works are to be carried out by the OPW.

The biggest allocation of €85,000 will go towards access, safety, and presentation work at Carlingford Castle, Co Louth. Kilmainham Gaol will net €60,000 for re-roofing its east wing.

Recently, €45,000 was announced for the restoration of the ruined home of the late Blasket Island writer, Tomas Ó Criomhthain. That is expected to start soon.

A decision by Kerry County Council on a planning application is due in early next month. Only the four walls of the house remain. The plan is to recreate the structure as it looked in the 1920s/30s.

The second €45,000 allocation, just announced, is a house, known as ‘Tig White’, which is being restored for use as a base for OPW staff on the island.
