Investment in roads and public transport is running €300m below the level needed just to maintain the system, as commuters reject public transport in favour of cars.

An overview of Irish transport compiled by the Department of Transport shows the reliance on cars over public transport remains entrenched.

The report found 75% of all journeys in the country are being taken by car, while buses account for 3.8% and rail/Dart/Luas for 1.5%.
