Taoiseach Enda Kenny is facing accusations of spreading “fiction” after he claimed Ireland, unlike Greece, did not hike up taxes or Vat during its bailout programme.

Fianna Fáil yesterday outlined up to 45 new charges and taxes faced by citizens in recent years, with party leader Micheál Martin insisting that Mr Kenny’s comments about there being no tax hikes were “untrue”.

The criticism follows Mr Kenny’s comments in Brussels last week where, in response to the crisis in Greece, he claimed Ireland did not increase income tax, Vat, or PRSI.
