A nursing home faces “a real possibility of closure” after the National Roads Authority succeeded, on grounds of traffic safety, in overturning planning approval for an extension.

The Padre Pio Rest Home, at Kilderriheen, Cappoquin, was granted planning permission six months ago by Waterford Co Council.

But the NRA challenged the decision to An Bord Pleanála, because the centre exited onto a national secondary road, on which speed limits were 100 km/h.
