Youth stuck in boot as car sped through city

A young man was stuck in the boot of a car driven at high speed through the northside of Cork City before it crashed, it emerged at Cork District Court.

Driver of the uninsured 16-year-old Saab, Alan Moore, aged 19, of 76 Killala Gardens, Knocknaheeny, Cork, yesterday pleaded guilty to several dangerous driving charges.

Inspector Mary King said gardaí from Gurranabraher Garda Station first observed the car being driven at high speeds at Churchfield Way Lower and the blue lights and siren were activated in a patrol car which pursued the Saab. It failed to stop and it was seen continuing at high speed and driving directly over a roundabout and then over speed bumps.

Insp King said the car went through two sets of red traffic lights at Fairhill and Mount Agnes Rd. The car did not stop until it crashed at Blackstone Bridge, Killeens, on November 12 last.

“The vehicle was carrying six people in total including one youth in the boot,” the inspector said.

Pat Horan, defending, said the defendant made contact with an addiction counsellor.

The judge said he would adjourn sentencing until September 17 to hear an update on his actions in relation to addressing his substance abuse.
