VIDEO: Live at the Marquee: Adoring crowd loves all of charismatic John Legend

Having collaborated with Kanye West and Jay Z prior to the release of his solo 2004 debut album, John Legend last night followed the hip hop giants’ trajectory by playing his own standalone show Live at the Marquee.

Emerging onstage to Made To Love and a rapturous applause, Legend, dressed all in black with a leather jacket, looks every bit the star as he descends from a platform to meet his adoring crowd.

Fan reactions to John Legend

He prowls back and forth, working the crowd throughout the opening number before taking to the grand piano to finish the opener with a flourish.

For the quieter moments, the lighting and minimal stage set up combine to transform the cavernous Marquee into an intimate lounge, but Legend refuses to conform to any single musical style, gliding from soul and gospel to more upbeat R&B and hip hop.

New song Dance from his forthcoming album is greeted with as much enthusiasm as his chart topping hits, its jangling guitar and funk bass matched by a boisterous brass trio.

John Legend - All of Me

A multi-Grammy winning artist, Legend added an Oscar to his list of accolades earlier this year for his musical contribution to civil rights drama Selma.

The politically active singer songwriter took to the stage in Cork fresh from tweeting his thoughts on the fallout from the recent shootings in Charleston.

Here, however, the chatter between tunes is largely apolitical and Legend keeps the crowd firmly in the palm of his hand.

He takes a breather at one point, going off stage to allow his more than capable backing singers have their time to shine.

While they display their impressive vocal range, Legend changes into a baby blue lounge suit and returns to deliver a low key rendition of Save Room.

John Legend - Glory

If his charisma didn’t win the crowd over, playing up to the local patrons earns Legend some kudos with the Cork audience.

“It’s so good to be in the real capital of Ireland for the first time,” he knowingly smiles to a roar of approval.

As Legend’s sounds drift from the marquee and across the marina, one thing is certain — all in the Marquee loves all of him.
