Robbie Keane tribute on second cousin’s death
Stephen Harris, 34, from Monasterboice Rd, Crumlin, in Dublin passed away at 9am yesterday in Beaumont Hospital.
He had been overcome by toxic fumes while trying to rescue his brother, Alan, 45, from a sewer pit in Drumnigh Wood in Portmarnock.
Both brothers had been carrying out maintenance works at the time for Alan’s company Draintech when an incident occurred shortly after 2pm on Wednesday.
Emergency services were alerted after Alan initially got into difficulties when he entered the sewer in north Co Dublin.
Resuscitation failed and he was pronounced dead on the way to hospital.
His brother had remained in a critical condition after being admitted to hospital.
Stephen had suffered similar breathing difficulties.
Members of Dublin Fire Brigade and other emergency services tasked to the scene performed CPR on Stephen before his admission to hospital.
The gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority are carrying out separate investigations.
On his Facebook page yesterday, soccer star Mr Keane said: “With a heavy heart I write this. May Stephen rest in peace. Once again I would like to thank you all for your kind messages and the love and support you have shown my family.”
The LA Galaxy striker had acknowledged Alan’s death earlier in the week and said it was a “difficult time” for the family.
Alan Harris’ wife Tracy Glynn Harris also posted an emotional tribute to her late husband. “Tragically I lost my best friend and soulmate Alan Harris. My heart has been shattered into a million places yet again.”
Alan’s son, Alan Jr, wrote on Facebook: “My Super Hero uncle who went straight down to try and save my dad’s life has also passed away. I wish I could have thanked you properly man, your a hero.
“Shows what we are made of that you’d give your life for your brother.”
Alan Harris’ funeral takes place today at 10am at St Agnes’ Church in Crumlin.
