The ancestral home of Daniel O’Connell, the Liberator, officially reopened yesterday after a €1.25m makeover.

Minister of state for tourism and sport Michael Ring performed the ceremony at Derrynane House, Caherdaniel, Co Kerry.

Built largely to O’Connell’s design in the 1820s, the property, located in Derrynane National Historic Park, was presented to the people of Ireland by his descendants in 1964. It has an unparalleled collection of furniture, paintings, books and memorabilia associated with O’Connell.
