Irish nun trapped in elevator in Rome for three days

A 58-year-old Irish nun visiting Rome was trapped in an elevator for three days after it got stuck between floors in an empty building.

She was descending to the ground floor with a 68-year-old nun from New Zealand last Friday when they became trapped between floors in the Marist Sisters Home, which hosts members of religious missions who travel through Rome.

The pair were without food or water for three days.

They called for help but as the building was empty no one could hear their cries. Neither had a mobile phone to call for assistance.

They were rescued on Monday, when a cleaner received no answer at the door and notified the police at San Pietro.

A nearby religious institute had keys for the building and the women were discovered after the sergeant shouted from the ground floor.

He heard a faint whisper: "Yes, we are here, in the elevator."

The patrol leader turned on a light and brought the lift to the ground floor before the fire department arrioved at the scene.

While entering the ambulance, the sisters thanked the emergency services, adding they had "prayed so much."

They are being treated for dehydration at the San Carlo di Nancy hospital.
