Gardaí in Limerick last night issued a warning to parents after a teenager received what they described as a sinister message on a gaming console.

Parents of the teenager alerted the gardaí when they became aware of interaction between the child and an adult male.

It is believed the adult had engaged with the teenager on the console, which was used solely for gaming.

However, it is believed what gardaí describe as ‘full perverse’ interaction took place between an adult who linked into the console of a teenager.

Distressed at the content of the messages, the teenager alerted parents who immediately contacted gardaí.

Gardaí at Henry Street have now acquired the teenager’s gaming console with the parents consent to try and find out the source of all contacts made to the console. A garda source said: “Youngsters use these consoles to engage in games and interact as they take part in different gaming pursuits, which can vary from soccer games to all kinds of challenges.

“However, an adult has got into one child’s system and began to engage. It started off quite normally, then the conversation descended into a very sinister perverse engagement and thankfully the child decided to terminate the interaction and alerted the parents. A full investigation is now underway to try and track down the male who was involved. But we would advise parents to keep a check on gaming consoles and ensuring that security settings are in place to restrict access.

“Parents need to be vigilant as these consoles give huge fun and enjoyment, but they can very easily be targeted by sinister individuals for their own gratification at the expense of vulnerable young people who they target.”
