Portlaoise babies: Correspondence relating to the death of baby Mark

On the morning of January 24, 2012 Mark and Roisin Molloy’s son Mark passed away just moments after he was delivered at the Midland’s Regional Hospital.

In the intervening three years and four months, the couple has fought “against continuous and considerable opposition” to get the answer to one simple question: what happened.

Immediately after their child died, they wrote to management at the hospital outlining their

concerns. Ignored, they then sent a succession of warnings for two years to every

level of the HSE and Department of Health spelling out their concerns for the safety of other children following their son’s death. They again were

ignored.

Speaking before an Oireachtas health committee this week, Mark Molloy said there was an attempt at local and national level to “suppress” repeated red flags “which perpetuated failings leading to repeated deaths and injuries at a huge emotional, physical and financial

costs to families and patients.”
