Victim of fatal assault was stabbed 23 times
Two men Gerard Hogan, aged 32, of Raheen Square, Ballinacurra Weston, Limerick and Dylan Hayes, aged 20 of The Crescent, Kilteragh, Dooradoyle, Limerick, were yesterday refused bail by Judge Timothy Lucey.
Both are charged with assault causing harm to Shane Murphy, aged 31, at 1 The Grove, Pallsagreen, and with producing a knife while committing the alleged attack.
Objecting to bail, Det Garda Michael Reidy said it was likely more serious charges may be brought against the two accused.
He said Shane Murphy received fatal stab wounds at about 11.10pm on April 30.
It had been alleged, he said, that several people were there and witnesses had outlined in statements to gardaí that Mr Murphy had been the victim of a sustained attack in a frenzied manner.
He said an autopsy carried out at University Hospital Limerick by state pathologist Marie Cassidy found 23 stab wounds on the body, a number of which would have been fatal.
Refusing bail, Judge Lucey remanded both men in custody to Limerick District Court where they will appear by video link from Limerick prison on May 19.
