The State needs to double the rate of private house building and build the right homes where people need them, the housing minister has said.

Paudie Coffey also said he was considering setting up housing taskforces for other major cities, modelled on the Dublin Housing Supply and Coordination Taskforce, to map and analyse land available for housing as part of measures to rapidly enhance housing supply.

The minister made his comments at the opening of the Irish Planning Institute’s annual conference in Cork yesterday.
