People urged to cut car use and take public transport

Cork County Council, through the EU Atlantic- Area funded Batterie project, has developed a journey-planning site for public transport, cycling and electric vehicles.

The Mix Your Mode Journey Planner allows people who are planning a journey to get the best information possible on what their travel options are so they can compare the various modes of transport and be guided towards the most efficient way to make their journey.

The mixyourmode.ie website is optimised for use on mobile devices such as smartphones.

It allows for the planning of a trip by in real-time or at a defined departure time and is the first journey planner specific to Cork — although it does list locations for every electric vehicle charging point in the country.

Mayor of the County of Cork Alan Coleman, launched the website earlier this week saying there is an appetite for sustainable travel in Cork evidenced in the increasing demand for cycling and walking infrastructure and the success of initiatives such as the Mix Your Mode and Drive 4 Zero campaigns.

Chairman of the council’s Smarter Travel Workplace Group Declan Daly said that the local authority “are always looking at ways to encourage the people of Cork to put in to practice the sustainable principles we advocate and this journey planner facilitates that”.

He said that the council will certainly be encouraging its employees to use it and not only for their journeys to and from work.

The journey planner’s software will allows for the regular updating of mapping and other data.
