Kerry to reel in dance champions
Competitors from the US, Scotland, England, continental Europe, and all over Ireland will compete for a world title at the Killarney Convention Centre, giving a €2.5m boost to the local economy.
A total of 43 competitions will take place over the eight-day event, which is being held in the INEC auditorium.
The youngest dancer in the competition — being held in Killarney for the second year in succession — is nine years old, while the oldest is aged 25.
The competitors will be accompanied by a large entourage of organisers, teachers, adjudicators, musicians, families, friends, supporters, and spectators.
Killarney Convention Centre managing director Patrick O’Donoghue said: “The enormous economic benefit of these championships will be felt right across Killarney’s hotels, restaurants, shops, retail, and other businesses.
“It has been confirmed by various agency surveys that events such as these championships generate in excess of €2.5m to the local economy.”
World Irish Dance Championship chairman Matthew Donohoe said the dancers had been preparing for many months to showcase their exceptional talent.
“Our world championships enjoy a very high standard year on year and we are very proud that we have a record number of entries both in solo and figure dancing this year,” said Mr Donohoe.
Both male and female world champions will be crowned across a range of age categories from under-10 through to adult.
About 400 teams will take part in the prestigious dance championships.
