Man pleads guilty over anxiety tablet stash

A stash of anxiety tablets were found in the bedroom of a young man who pleaded guilty yesterday to charges related to dealing the drugs.

Detective Garda Alan Johnson testified at Cork District Court yesterday that he went to the home of Darren Twomey, aged 20, at 1 Innismore Square, Ballincollig, Co Cork, and found 360 Tranax tablets.

The tablets are associated with the moderation of anxiety and depression.

It was estimated that the street value for the tablets was €760.

Twomey was arrested and charged yesterday at Cork District Court with possession of the tablets and having them for the purpose of sale or supply to others on February 27 last year.

Emma Leahy, defending, said Twomey was pleading guilty to both charges.

Inspector Gary McPolin said the DPP directed that it was a case suitable to be dealt with at the district court.

The inspector said Twomey had 22 previous convictions with a common thread of alcohol and public order offences and one for having drugs for supply previously in 2013. He was serving a sentence of six months for burglary before pleading guilty to the drugs offences yesterday.

Ms Leahy said the accused had a long addiction to prescription tablets even though he was only 20.

Judge Olann Kelleher imposed a six-month sentence on the drug supply charge and fined him €500 for having the drugs for his own use.
