Oireachtas members can no longer be trusted to make international phonecalls without permission after one TD or senator cost the taxpayer €2,000 by repeatedly ringing a mobile phone number in Kenya, a Dáil deputy has warned.

Independent TD John Halligan insisted restrictions are required after the high-cost calls to Africa were exposed.

Oireachtas authorities say that confidentiality rules prevent naming the TD or senator.
