A woman has appeared in court charged with the murder of her 11-year-old daughter in 2012.

Bernadette Scully, aged 56, of Emvale, Bachelors Walk, Tullamore, Co Offaly, appeared before a sitting of Tullamore District Court yesterday. She was charged with the murder of Emily Barut at the Bachelors Walk house on September 15, 2012.

Det Sgt Jer Glavin gave evidence of arresting the local GP at Bachelors Walk at 9.40am yesterday.

He said that “in response to the charge on caution Ms Scully made no reply.”

He applied to have her remanded in custody to the Dochas Centre to reappear before Tullamore District Court tomorrow.

Solicitor Patricia Cronin said given the nature of the charge, she could not make an application for bail.

She told Judge Catherine Staines that an application will be made for legal aid.

Ms Cronin asked that any necessary medical attention be provided and she asked that her client be medically assessed.

Judge Staines recommended that Ms Scully be medically assessed.

She remanded her in custody to the Dochas Centre to reappear before Tullamore District Court tomorrow.
