Special litter ‘hit squads’ are to be deployed throughout Co Cork to tackle illegal dumping, after a pilot scheme removed 17 tonnes of waste from roadsides in just 49 days.

Those involved in the pilot scheme, introduced by Cork County Council last year, were brought in to clean up after complaints from the public.

They were based in east Cork, but the local authority now plans to set up teams which will be based in the northern, western and southern parts of the region and will respond quickly to fly-tipping complaints.
