No injunction to move Travellers

No injunction was granted yesterday to move Travellers living near an embankment where goats have created a risk of falling rocks.

Cork City Council brought the application to Cork Circuit Court through Pearse Sreenan, barrister.

Defence solicitor, Donal Daly, said he needed to get an engineer to the site and look into civil legal aid, and sought an adjournment, which Judge David Riordan granted an until January 12.

Mr Sreenan had argued that goats gathering on an embankment were creating a risk of rocks falling on caravans and possibly on children playing near them.

He said one family had already moved to another part of the site and the council had arranged to provide sanitation and electricity within 24 hours.

Mr Sreenan said the council wanted to bring an injunction against the owners and occupiers of caravans at Ellis’s yard, Blackpool, and Spring Lane halting site. He said a number of caravans were legitimately on the site but that four, and now three, were near an embankment.

Mr Daly said at the outset yesterday: “I will be applying for an adjournment. It is a very serious issue for all the families six days before Christmas and it involves moving the families.”
