Man’s body recovered from water in Castletownbere

The man’s body was recovered from the water at Dinish Pier in Castletownbere after it was discovered at about 2pm between two fishing trawlers which were tied up in the area.

Emergency services attended the scene and the man’s body was recovered. He was pronounced dead by a doctor at the scene.

It is understood the man is John Gerard Lowney, a hugely popular figure locally who was heavily involved in fishing and who was a pivotal figure in Urhan and Beara GAA.

More recently he acted as chairman of Beara Coiste na nÓg and was central to numerous fundraising efforts for local clubs and charities.

The coastguard were joined at the scene by the rescue 115 helicopter out of Shannon, a local doctor and a HSE ambulance.

Meanwhile Coastguard units and the emergency services were last night assessing an injured crewman of a 50ft mussel boat near Schull.

The vessel was moored when emergency personnel attended to two men believed to be suffering from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

While one of the men was treated at the pier by medical personnel, another had to be taken by helicopter, again out of Shannon, to Cork University Hospital. There were six men on board the vessel at the time of the alert just before 7pm.
