Man jailed for a year after entering girls’ school

A man banned under the Sex Offenders Act from entering school buildings was caught at a girl’s secondary school asking about how he could access the area for "18-to- 22-year-olds".

He was jailed for a year yesterday.

Anthony Goodman, aged 69, of Charlemont Terrace, Wellington Road, Cork, was charged by Detective Sergeant Vincent O’Sullivan, that on June 11, just before 1pm, he entered Scoil Mhuire secondary school, Wellington Rd, Cork. That was one of six schools he was specifically banned from visiting.

Judge Seán Ó Donnabháin said yesterday: “This is an extremely serious case of a man with worrying tendencies perhaps all his life that he seems unwilling or unable to attend to.

“In contravention of a specific court order he turns up at one of these schools which is very worrying.

“Am I to believe there is no redemption for this man other than to lock him up for the rest of his life? He has to control himself,” the judge said.

At that point, the accused asked if he could speak from the dock. Goodman said: “I have shown remorse. I am willing, if you give me a suspended sentence, if you give me some light at the end of the tunnel. I got done for stabbings I got done for burglaries. If you give me one last chance of a suspended sentence I would never come back to court again. I want to see if I could stay out of prison.”

The judge said: “All I can read from his speech from the dock is that he has even less insight than I thought. I think the appropriate sentence is 18 months, with the last six months suspended.”

The charge alleged that Goodman was in contravention of a Sex Offenders order made in respect of him on June 29, 2012. He was barred from going near certain schools.

On June 11, Goodman was seen peering in through double doors at Scoil Mhuire on Wellington Rd, Cork. He asked a secretary working there how he could get into the building with the 18-to 22-year-olds. He was seen on CCTV leaving the area and later arrested.

Detective Sergeant Vincent O’Sullivan said Goodman was arrested in Limerick having turned up at the University of Limerick sports arena in contravention of his bail. He entered the ladies’ changing rooms.

His convictions included nine sexual offences convictions, assault to commit sexual assault, sexual assault on females and indecency.
