A man in his 40s has died in a collision near Mallow, Co Cork.

The two-vehicle crash occurred at around 6.40pm yesterday on the N20 between Buttevant and Mallow.

The victim was a passenger in a car being driven in the Limerick direction when it collided with a car near the Ballybeg bends south of Buttevant. The deceased is believed to be from eastern Europe but was living in Limerick. The driver of the car is also eastern European.

The driver of the other car is understood to be a local man. Both drivers were taken to hospital, one to Limerick and the other to Cork University Hospital. Their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

The crash brings to 177 the number of people killed on our roads so far in 2014.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to call Mallow station on 022 31450, Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any station.
