Families pay almost €5k more to live near schools

Families seeking homes pay an average of €4,700 more to live within 200m of a primary school and €3,600 more for a secondary school.

According to a property website study into the cost of living near schools, the cost rises to €25,000 for south Co Dublin primary schools

Outside of Dublin, the cost of living near a primary school is highest in Wicklow at €7,500.

Cork City has the highest cost in terms of living near a secondary school, coming in at €4,735.

The Daft.ie study found to live near a primary schools costs more in rural areas than cities and towns, but less for post primary schools.

It also costs more to live near primary schools that have smaller class sizes.

Secondary schools which progress a higher percentage of their students through to higher education do not cost more to be near.

The report also examined the impact the type of school has on nearby house prices, with primary schools with smaller class sizes having the biggest impact on prices. However, the actual size of the primary school doesn’t have a significant impact on paying more.

Fee-paying secondary schools are not valued much more than non-fee paying schools.
