Victim suffered broken eye socket and cheekbone

Gerard O’Regan, aged 26, of 4 Mahon Crescent, Mahon, Cork, was sentenced to three years in prison, suspended on condition that he keeps the peace for four years and complies with probation service directions for two years, for assault causing harm to Edward Finn at Hanover St, Cork, on February 2, 2013.

Judge David Riordan said: “He caused significant harm to Mr Finn. It is significant that he has secured a conviction for a similar offence where a jaw bone was fractured within the same year. Having regard to the fact that he lay in wait and was conscious of being away from CCTV cameras does show a certain amount of design. And he assaulted him pretty horribly. But sentencing is not an exercise in vengeance.”
