Cork County Council is offering some Christmas cheer to shoppers after announcing that there will be "some relaxation" in charges in eight towns which have pay parking.

Deputy chief executive Declan Daly said he would be making suggestions to members of the eight municipal districts about providing free or discounted parking in the run-up to Christmas.

He was speaking after Cllr Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire (SF) put down a motion calling on the authority to provide “a special temporary relaxation of pay parking from November 21 to December 24”. Mr Ó Laoghaire said it would help businesses which were also facing a lot of competition from out-of-town multiples which had free parking.
