‘No gain without pain’ warning ahead of water works in Bandon

Residents and businesses in Bandon have been warned there’s "no gain without pain" as they face major upheaval with work due to start early next year on three schemes.

Cork County Council is toappoint a liaison officer to help minimise disruption ahead of the works on Bandon’s water, sewerage, and flood prevention schemes.

Engineering consultants Byrne Looby & Partners are preparing contract documents for the completion of the €5m main sewerage scheme which will see extensive works in the town centre and on the Clonakilty Road, Dunmanway Road, and Glasslinn Road. Work is due to start on this next March and be completed by June 2016.

Around €6m is also to be spent upgrading the town’s sewerage treatment plant, which should be completed by December 2016.

Meanwhile, a €10m flood relief scheme is being advanced by the Office of Public Works in partnership with Cork County Council.

County engineer David Keane said the scheme will involve the construction of new walls and embankments, the excavation of the river channel for a distance of 3km, replacement of the existing footbridge, provision of fish passage along with works to the drainage system and a new pump station.

This project is due to get under way next March and be completed in the winter of 2016.

Upgrading of the town’s water supply network is also being carried out by Cork County Council, which is acting as local agents on the project for Irish Water.
