Councillors campaign to keep chains of office in local areas

A tug of war over a chain of office and mayoral robe which has "opened up a wider can of worms" will be decided by a special committee of Cork County Council.

A case has been made to give a newly formed group in Clonakilty the use of the town council’s former signatures of office for the occasional ceremonial occasion, rather than have them put full-time into a museum or locked away in County Hall.

The Clonakilty group, which has elected a community mayor, has no statutory powers as its former town council did.
