Woman dies after falling in front of train

The victim, aged 57, who lived near Raheny Station, on the capital’s northside, was waiting for a northbound Dart commuter train at around 1.45pm when she fell.

She was hit by a train travelling from the city’s Pearse Street station to Drogheda, which does not stop at Raheny.

Irish Rail said it offered its sympathies to the victim’s family and friends for their tragic loss.

“Despite the efforts of the driver who applied the emergency brake and a young woman on the southbound platform who also alerted the driver to the incident, it was not possible to stop the train before it struck the woman,” a spokesman said.

Services were suspended between Howth Junction and Connolly as the emergency services attended the scene.

The woman was taken to Beaumont Hospital where she later died as a result of her injuries.

Irish Rail said the driver of the train will receive counselling and support following the incident.

Gardaí said they were investigating the incident.
