’I miss him, but it’s ok’: 10-year-old Irish girl’s inspiring video about dad’s suicide

Alex Featherston's father Andy died three years ago. Her mother told her he died from a heart attack, but Alex says she just knew that wasn't true as he never had any heart complaints.

She confronted her mother a few weeks after her father died and was told the truth - Andy had committed suicide.

Alex has discussed the effects of her father's suicide in a video on YouTube, which has been viewed by over 10,000 people.

"My mam told me that my dad died by suicide and I had one question for her: why did he do it? She didn't really know why, she just said I don't know."

Alex explains that theres a big difference between when someone takes their own life and has a heart attack.

"When someone has a heart attack they probably don't want to die, but when you take your own life that means you do."

Her father's death left her feeling upset but she is glad her mother told her the truth.

"I got angry at him. How could you just leave your children and your wife like that? I was glad [she told me] because I would rather have known. I'd be furious at her because she didn't tell me the truth for all those years."

The support Alex received after her dad's death has been built upon.

"People wanted to help, and the Andy Morgan Foundation was made."

The Andy Morgan Foundation was set up in memory of Alex's dad. It aims to help thse suffering from depression and they support people who have lost someone to suicide.

"You don't have to do what my dad did, you can just talk to them and they'll help you," says Alex. "There's always going to be someone there for you. You don't have to cry on your own."

Alex's story has touched the hearts of many, with people writing about their support of the video on Twitter using the hashtag #isupportalex.
