‘Crazy’ bid to privatise flood defences

A decision to engage private contractors to partly operate flood defence barriers in a Co Cork town was yesterday condemned as "absolutely crazy".

County council staff have been trained to activate flood barriers in one section of Fermoy town.

However, the OPW will have to employ a private company to operate flood barriers on the southern side of the town where the second phase of a near-€40m scheme is being completed.
