Truck sculpture made from bales gets motorists’ seal of approval

This eye-catching display has become a new feature on the side of the M8 motorway from Cork to Dublin since it was constructed on Monday night to promote the Dualla Show, which takes place in the Tipperary village on Sunday, August 31.

According to one of the organisers of the show, which takes place not far from Cashel in the grounds of Ballyowen House, the sculpture was the result of teamwork involving a number of local people.

“Eight guys put it together on Monday night,” Dermot O’Halloran said. “It took them about five hours, they were doing it until 11 at night.

“That’s the great thing about the community — there’s always someone with a loader or a tractor or trailer willing to lend a hand.”

He said the idea for the sculpture came from some local truck show enthusiasts and that the bales were contributed by different people in the locality.

“A lot of rope went into it as well,” he said. “It is totally tied down.”

The sculpture, not far from Horse and Jockey, has certainly caught the attention of numerous road users.

“I was there for 45 minutes last night and every two minutes a truck was passing and blowing the horn,” Dermot said.

In recent years, the community in Dualla purchased a sports field and built a community centre, and hold events to raise money to pay off the money spent on these facilities.

The Dualla Show is a “community show”, according to Dermot, who said that “it has been running in some form for many years, but in the last three years it went to a new level”.

Details about the show, which will feature everything from livestock and equine to a gymkhana and tractor pulling, can be found at www.duallashow.ie.
