Man, 82, on rape charges gets bail

An 82-year-old American who was extradited to this country last week on rape and sexual assault charges was yesterday granted bail at Limerick District Court.

Bail conditions include the lodgment of €5,000 cash in court and that he resides at an address in Limerick, approved by gardaí.

The accused was arrested in America on an Irish extradition warrant and brought to Shannon by gardaí who had travelled to the US. He cannot be named for legal reasons.

The offences are alleged to have occurred in Limerick in 2010 when the accused, and the women he was alleged to have raped and assaulted, attended an event.

Defence counsel Pat Barriscale said the State was not opposed to bail subject to certain conditions.

Judge Eugene O’Kelly remanded the accused with consent to bail on condition that he lodges €5,000 cash in court; signs on three times a week at Henry Street Garda Station; that gardaí retain his passport; he does not apply for travel documents; and resides at an address to be approved by gardaí.

He is due in court again on July 22.
