Donations surge for Gavin and target is reached in just one week

We wrote about Gavin's struggle last Wednesday and his story went viral. The family's appeal for help touched the hearts of the nation, and the nation reached into its pocket.

In just one week donations to Gavin's fund skyrocketed and quickly reached the €350,000 target.

Gavin's parents, who are with him in the US for initial testing, posted their thanks on Facebook yesterday.

"We have hit the 350k mark, Gavin is about to go to MD Anderson for his first appointment, We will update at the end of the day to let you all know how he gotten on.

"Thank you all for your support and generosity."

Gavin Glynn was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer which affects his muscles, when he was 17 months old. After three years of tests and operations, Gavin's parents, John and Jayne, had been told that there is no treatment available in Ireland for their son.

John posted a video to YouTube explaining their plight and appealing to the public for assistance.

Gavin and his parents are in Houston to meet with up the surgical team at MD Anderson to discuss his treatment.

John was shocked to discover the cost. "I thought they had put an extra 0 in by accident but this was not the case. It is scary to think we need this amount and I know with all the support of everyone fundraising and donating that we will get it."

John is determined to do everything he can to rid his son of cancer. "If I have to sell my own organs to pay for it, I will."
