SVP calls for social welfare increase

The Government has been urged to increase social welfare by at least 3.25% and to impose rent caps on landlords as part of a series of measures to help the most vulnerable in the country.

The Society of St Vincent de Paul made the pleas yesterday as part of its pre-budget submission, insisting the moves must be considered to stave off a growing poverty crisis.

After six years of austerity and deepening cuts to vital services, the group said the most vulnerable in society cannot cope with another 12 months without any financial relief.
