A year ago, Amelia Colbert decided that for her 11th birthday she’d like to swim around an island off the Co Cork coast and that’s exactly what she just did.
It’s believed she’s the youngest person ever to complete a non-stop swim around Sandycove Island near Kinsale.
However, it wasn’t achieved without some serious preparation.
Amelia had to put in two vigorous sessions in a swimming pool each week in the lead up to the 2,000 metre swim around the uninhabited island.
She spent three months increasing her swimming distance each time until her trainer Andy Lockington of Kinsale Triathlon Club knew she was up to the task.
Initially, she hoped to complete the feat on June 16, but high tides prevented her doing so.
Then two days later conditions looked ideal especially, around 8pm, when the wind dropped.
Despite the fact Amelia was due back in 5th class at Gaelscoil Chionn tSaile the following morning she decided to go for it.
“Once Amelia got around the first corner she was very comfortable and enjoying every minute of it,” Andy said.
“Her training had obviously paid off and she continued looking strong around the second and last corner when she got her first glimpse of the finish line. Taking everything in her stride Amelia cruised into the final 10 metres to the cheers of very impressed onlookers,” Andy said.
He said it was a huge achievement for one so young.
“I think we have created a ‘monster’. She has the bug now and I’m sure it’s only the beginning of Amelia’s exploits,” Andy added.
