Fine Gael members believe former justice minister Alan Shatter’s criticism of the Guerin report has been "unhelpful" following his claim that its findings were fundamentally flawed.

Mr Shatter is now expected to be given an opportunity to air his disagreements with the Guerin report in a fuller inquiry after expressing criticism over the Government-commissioned probe.

Frances Fitzgerald, his successor, yesterday said he had every right to speak his mind about the Guerin findings, but the Government stood by the report.
