Such deaths are now significantly more common in Ireland than in the EU and in Britain, according to the National Suicide Research Foundation.

Vital statistics published by the CSO show there were 271 accidental poisonings last year, compared to 112 in 2004. Between last October and December there were 76 such deaths.
