Attempts to compel former Rehab bosses to answer questions about spending look set to be denied, in a move which may undermine the future work of the Public Accounts Committee.

John McGuinness, the head of the Oireachtas committee, confirmed it now looked likely that it would be refused permission it had sought to compel witnesses to appear at hearings.

Speaking to the Irish Examiner, he said that PAC’s future work would be hampered.
