Michael Noonan has said he is keen to remain as finance minister to oversee the remaining two budgets in the coalition’s lifetime and he is in good form after his treatment for cancer.

Cabinet colleagues said they had not known about the cancer scare for the Limerick TD.

Mr Noonan described how he became worried about a lump in his arm while showering in February. He said he had his operation on Wednesday last and he was discharged on Saturday. He said he took it easy over the weekend and took Dáil Leaders’ questions yesterday as the Taoiseach was away on business in the US.
