Sinn Féin has emphatically ruled out a mayoral pact in Cork City unless there are sweeping changes to how the chain of office is allocated.

The party’s leader on Cork City Council, Cllr Chris O’Leary, called last night for the introduction of the d’Hondt system — named after the Belgian mathematician who devised it — which would see the mayoral chain and committee chairmanships allocated based on a councillors’ share of the vote.

His call came as Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil councillors began a round of meetings yesterday afternoon to pick over the local election results.
