VIDEO: In search of ’Game of Thrones’ in Northern Ireland

What’s your idea of a perfect road trip? For one group of friends it’s a two-day, 800 km journey along the Kingsroad to take in the sights of Westeros — or Northern Ireland as it’s usually known.

Rafaela Oliveira, Fillipe Cardoso, Angelo Brandes and Vinícius Rodrigues are a group of Brazilian friends studying in Ireland.

The fans of the HBO series spent two days exploring Northern Ireland and searching for landmarks from Game of Thrones. They filmed their adventures and uploaded a video to YouTube.

"We rented a car and drove oven 800 km in 2 days for many villages, cities and small towns documenting the beautiful landscapes and castles of the Island," said Rafaela.

"We wanted to document the trip and we chose film because it is our field of work, and Northern Ireland has beautiful places, which looked amazing on video."

Discover Northern Ireland has been capitalising on the success of the hit TV show. Their website explains in detail where scenes from the popular show were filmed and provide directions to Winterfell, the Iron Islands and Dragonstone, among other locations.

The Game of Thrones Exhibition returns to Belfast on June 11-15. Those in possession of one of the elusive free tickets can view props from the set and pore over maps of key filming locations.

Marie-Therese O’Neill from the Northern Ireland Tourist Board says Game of Thrones has been a great boost for Northern Ireland.

“ Game of Thrones has been hugely successful for HBO but also for Northern Ireland as our stunning mountains, forests, lakes and countryside, now familiar to millions of people around the world, have helped to create the magical backdrop that much of the show’s action is filmed against.”
