Labour leader Eamon Gilmore has defended the Coalition’s record in tackling homelessness after social justice campaigner Peter McVerry predicted that the crisis will "bring this Government down".

The Peter McVerry Trust, which has been operating since 1983, is for the first time turning people away because of a lack of capacity, according to its founder.

“In all the years I have been working with homeless people, it has never been so bad. We are beyond crisis at this stage,” Fr McVerry said on the Miriam Meets programme on RTÉ radio.
