Limerick city to crown a chip champ

Do you have what it takes to create the ultimate chip?

Limerick city to crown a chip champ

The City of Culture will crown the first World Chip Champion over the June bank holiday weekend.

The inaugural championships will take place in the Spiegeltent during Limerick’s Culture & Chips food carnival, which runs from May 29 to June 2.

Competitors will get oiled up on Saturday, May 31, when a host of chefs cook up a storm, each with their own unique passion for the frite.

Judges will be looking for style, colour, elegance, and of course taste.

We’re not talking any old chips, of course. From pulled pork fries to poutine, baked mozzarella sticks to kale chips, they all count here, where taste will be the ultimate winner. Anyone for turnip disco fries? Some rosemary truffle ketchup, perhaps?

Organisers are calling on the most creative cooks to get involved.

There will be two rounds and the judging panel — including Masterchef Ireland’s Nick Munier — is already salivating at the prospect.

Culture & Chips is a quirky food carnival taking place over the June bank holiday weekend in Limerick City Centre in association with Limerick City of Culture 2014.

Other events in the Spiegeltent include the Jerry Fish Electric Sideshow live, a wine goose chase, culinary carnival banquet, Spiegelkidz rhythm, cabaret des frites, Spiegeltent Breakfast Club, Jack L live, clown noir, salon du chat, and the Brad Pitt Light Orchestra.
